10 things to do after you publish your HubPage article
89You’ve hit the publish button on your new HubPage Internet article. Time to let it go? Time to get on to something else? Not so fast there Internet writer. You are not really done!
Yes, it took plenty of time, energy, and creativity to produce that little gem. Yes, your article has to stand on its own, and hopefully find an audience that appreciates it as much as you do. However, your work on behalf of that article is not quite done. You really should do a few small things to: protect it, promote it, propagate it, and possibly improve it.
Hit the Publish button, then hit the checklist...
Here are ten things that are easy to do and will make you feel better about your creation. They take only minutes each, and will help you to get better results from your article and your writing efforts.
Backup your HubPage immediately
Don’t rely on your old notes. Don’t rely on the publisher’s servers. HubPages has made it easy for you to make a copy.Follow these easy steps to backup your HubPage. You might make changes later, but this is the version "as originally published."
Create a custom URL in AdSense.
Your new article is now out there ready for readers, for ads, for clicks... Doesn't it make sense to track how it performs?
HubPages has a very nice system setup with their Google AdSense relationship, and their URL creation syntax. This allows you to track an individual HubPages statistics including impressions, clicks and revenue. As the screen shots below show, simply:
- Open your Google AdSense account, go to AdSense Setup, then click Channels.
- Then click + Add new URL channels
- Enter your HubPage URL (without the http:/), as shown, then click on Add channels.
Now this Hubs activities will be individually tracked for you.

You wrote it, now blurb it...
You’ve spent some quality creative time on your article. It’s fresh in your mind. Now is the time to write a promotional blurb and post it on one of the blurb sites. The postings take just a few minutes to create, and they will generate back-links and can create traffic from the blurb sites community. Additionally, I've seen that these blurb sites get scanned very quickly by Google. Here are some places you can use to pop out some quick promotions for your new article:
Send Email links to family, friends, close strangers...
Who is interested in you and your writing? Who do you communicate with? Keep them up to date. Shoot out an Email.. "look at my latest article... give them the magic link ....
Share it.
Ideally your audience will love your work and hit the Share button for you. That will be nice, but you have to be your first fan. Be the first to Stumble or Digg or FaceBook or Twitter, or... Hopefully you won't be the last.
Hub links to your HubPage
Now that you've published the HubPage you have an active URL. Time to start the linking process. What other Hubs have you written that are possible places to edit in a link to this new treasure of the written word?
Write a connected HubPage
Some articles may be unique gems, one of a kind treasures. However, if you are looking for readers and clicks then you will benefit from clusters of articles that bang away at the keywords and support each other with overlapping or related content.
So, if this HubPage was good enough to publish, then ask your self what fits the first Hub focus and extends it into a family of HubPages.
Sleep on it.
Get a good nights sleep. The next day open that HubPage in edit mode and read it capsule by capsule.
When you are in the writing process, you often get too close to your words to be able to see them clearly. After you read a section a few times while writing it, your sensitivity to typos, readability, etc can suffer. The copy is too familiar to you.
Let it rest for a day or so, and I'll bet that on rereading it, you can improve it.
Check your Google AdSense ads.
Google is going to place ads on your HubPage based on its analysis of your content. This adjustment to your content can take a while, but generally happens rather quickly. Do an ad check over the first day or so to see what you are getting.
If the ads are on target with your topic and keywords, then congratulate yourself on a job well done. If the ads are general, or seem off target, then Google is connecting with words other than your desired keywords. I did an article about oldest living things years ago. It drew traffic but no clicks. Recently I looked at the article more closely and saw that the ads were for tree services!? Well, it seems that some of the oldest living things are trees, and I had made the word "tree" a keyword in the view of the Goggle bots. They decided that tree service ads would appeal to my readers?!. Time to adjust the words!
When you look at the page, hit the refresh button a couple of times and check the ads each time. Google spreads the ad love among its advertisers, so the ads will rotate.
Get on with your life, but diary a revisit...
One month should do it. What ever the timing, leave the article alone for a while. Hop on any comments, of course, but let it rest. Look at everything with a fresh eye later. Check the overall look. Check readability. Check the ads. Tweak as desired. Getting any inspiration for your next HubPage?
Here is your checklist
- Back up your HubPage
- Track the URL in AdSense
- Blurb your article
- Send email links to friends...
- Share it
- Link from other HubPages
- Write a related HubPage
- Do a day two review
- Check your ads
- Do a one month review
HubPages has a terrific writer's community.
HubPages is a great place to publish Internet articles. If you are new here I'd like to welcome you to Hub-ville.
It's an active community of great Internet writers who are sociable and often leave helpful commentson your HubPages. Speaking of communities, you can utilize the social networking sites on the web to promote your HubPage or other articles.
You'll find helpful suggestions on things to do before you publish your HubPage, and things to do after you publish that HubPage article.
Useful PC articles for writers
To write great Internet articles you need some reliable tools. The basic tool is your PC and it needs to be ready when you are ready to create!
A slow PC can drain your energy when you are trying to be creative, so take some steps to speed up your PC. You are working in the wild Internet, so you need to keep the bad guys out! You need to backup all of your files including your HubPages.
When your PC is cranky and needs some service, what is better than free technical support?
The screen shots for this article were taken with a free utility called PrtScr. Speaking of free, who doesn't like free software? When you are jumping back and forth between your article draft and your research sites, you would appreciate a dual monitor display.

Excellent advice and good writing too! This one's worth a permanent bookmark. Now I'm off to put #11 into practice.
What a great checklist...and, like many others on HubPages, I can really put this information to good use. Thanks so much for posting this article.
Wow, I see I have alot to learn! Some of these suggestions are good reminders of what I already know. That its not how brilliant we think we are, but its about connecting to your readers and promoting your material.
This is exactly what I'm looking for, thank you for sharing your tips. =) Just published my first hub and don't know what should I do next. Have bookmarked this hub for future reference.
Wow! How did I miss this great hub with all my research on improving hubs? Thanks for the tip on tracking the hub url on adsense. I often wondered which hubs were doing well with adsense and which ones weren't. Thank you for sharing these awesome tips. Now I have to get to work :0)
Thank you so much for the helpful tips and information!!
Great information! From now on i will do that definitely. xD
Hi jstankevicz this is a high quality article that makes sense and is really helpful. You made my life on hub pages much easier. Thank you so much. Wish you a very successfrul 2011! :-) P.S. AdSense does have a new interface, maybe you'll see a need for update some information (???).
jstankevicz - Thanks for the much researched and much needed checklist for any new or old but learner hub- maker. Yes you need to keep reminding us of our check lists. Please keep updating and motivating ...Thanks again
I not only read your checklist, but applied it to the hub I published today. Whew! My brain is wracked, but am sure it will become easier as time goes on and I will be rewarded with additional visits to my hub. Thanks much.
Thanks. I am a newbie on HubPages and this is a great check list.
Great tips, I'm gonna print and save this one for more than just hub pages, sounds like most of this would work on any website and some on non-web writing too!
I am new to HobPages and the internet so this hub was perfect for me to read. As so many people have said--I love checklists! Especially when tackling a new venture, checklists keep me organized and ontrack. Thanks for the checklist and thanks for the new ideas. This one has a been bookmarked and I will looking around your other hubs as well. Thanks again for sharing.
Well i'm printing this page out. A good reminder for even us 'not so newbie' hubbers.
Will pin on my notice board that's right in my face while working at hub writings.
thank you for this useful Hub. Your checklist now is aslo mine!
Great Hub. Thanks
A very good hub worth bookmarking.
Awesome hub,very informative.
Thanks for sharing!
Very useful hub. I just followed the first step by backing up my hubs. I'll now review my hubs for the other points in your checklist. In particular sleeping on it is a good one: it's easy to get lost in your train of thought when you're writing. It's essential to read what you've written to make sure you're communicating clearly.
Thanks for the great suggestions. I was not aware of the need to back up a hub and I noticed you've written another hub about that topic which I'm going to read next! Proves your point about making it easy for a reader to follow relevant articles.
Thank you so much jstankevicz. I am bookmarking this site. You explain so well and clear. I'm a fan.
Very useful information here! Thanks for sharing!
I'm trying to write clusters of hubs myself on overlapping topics and I do find that it helps with traffic. Great advice!
Very assured and professional advice. I always write articles on "word" first then copy to hub article, that way I have a copy and it's easier to work on like that. I may be missing something, but the hubs would be useless for any other publication preserved in the hubpages format? Bob
I bookmarked this hub for future reference. I have been struggling with understanding how adsense and some of these things work. Thank you for breaking it down.
I am a big fan of checklists. This is going to come in handy as I review my recently published hubs and write more. Definitely one to bookmark. Thank you for the useful advice.
Great hub! Cheers. I'll follow your recommendations
Thanks! I just published my first Hub article and was wondering what to do next...I'm so glad your article came up on my search.
great advice, love to learn something new, just when I thought that I had been doing a good job. I have not traced my hubs and I should that is great advice. I also have been hubbing for quite a few months and realized that I was not getting credits for my links so I went back and opened all of my links to get credit for someone who signs up after viewing a link. Great advice!
Brilliant article, very much needed. I'am going to head off now and get cracking on some of this stuff.
Bookmarked and rated awesome.
Thank you.x
thanks for the tips and information.. its really useful :)
keep on updating, voted up already :)
Thanks for this informative hub. Very useful check list. I've bookmarked this hub.
I like number 11 :) Well said, if all that took to earn money is to write an article and post it we would all be rolling in money, we have to work hard for it, after all, this is a business like every other :)
Excellent post, sir!! Virtually every one of these points is solid advice, and that's a rarity. The first and last points are especially brilliant.
Thanks for a great useful hub, will pass it on to others !
I really enjoyed reading this hub. It is packed with great information that will be helpful to anyone writing a hub. Voted up.

When it comes to the Hub, I'm like stock car driver, who knows how to drive, but doesn't have a clue about mechanics. An understanding of both helps get the car around the track. These things sure a help. Thanks!
jim
I like it,voted up.Beautiful
Excellent advice and I have learnt new things too. Some people don't realise that it doesn't end with publishing the Hub.

Hi,
Wow, I never thought of checking the google adsense ads to compare them to my keywords. That is so smart and thank you for sharing. I also never thought of backing up my Hubs. Again thank you.

Great information, I seem to be learning something whenever I am reading through all of these hub pages. This is one I will use as a reference. Thanks for sharing this information.
I have always wondered which pages were getting, or not getting, Adsense clicks - I didn't realise you can track each one. Thanks for the tip - Ill add this to my post-hub check list
extremely helpful...i'm printing this list out and putting it on my wall! going to check out your other hubs now as well...
This checklist is a great idea. Bookmarked!
This is terrific info. Thanks for spelling it out for us visual people. I appreciate it! Aloha!
Hi, this is a great idea. I do try and link it to different pages, and also I go into my account page, check what sites have linked to me in the past, outside sites I mean, and then send over the appropriate hub again. Sometimes they get there first, but other times they need a quick kick! lol thanks for the info. Nell
I agree the checklist is an excellent idea and great ideas of what to do - I really do need to focus on these.
js,
Reading backwards has helped!
Thanks for sharing your ideas. This has been bookmarked.

Thank you, this has been bookmarked too. This was on my to-do list but is now done, thanks :)
Thanks for the tips. This was very informative!
Hi,
You're so right about leaving some space between writing and editing. I've so often missed obvious mistakes when checking my own work. I don't know why it is but we don't seem to see these things in our own work until later, when we've got at least a little bit of detachment from the work.
Thanks for all the good advice
Sir, you gave something all we need after published a hub. I think all your step useful for us. Thumbs up and Irate this hub. Glad to know you here.
Great advice. I like to see how different hubbers prioritize the things to do.
